Guarda Republicana

Carmo Convent
Lisbon, Portugal

The Carmo Convent is a well preserved old church - one that was ruined in the 1755 earthquake that struck Lisbon. It has now been converted into the headquarters of the Republican Guard - one of whom is seen here. Unlike the British Queen's Guard who are unflappable, these guys - at least according to our tour guide - are much more friendly. Our tour guide suggested we could interrupt their stares to get directions or even recommendations for a place to get some coffee but his sharp and gleaming sword dissuaded us from doing anything more disruptive than taking photographs.
