Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial

Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial

Innere Stadt
Vienna, Austria

This town square was the center of Jewlish life and community in Austria from the Middle Ages through to the Nazi era. The memorial in the center of it was made by the English artist Rachel Whiteread. It consists of a 10m x 7m block of concrete that looks like a library shelf except that all the books are turned with the spine in to suggest we will never know the stories of the 65,000 Austrian Jews who were killed in the Holocaust
